Re: Mount Athos. "From the Holy Mountain" written by William Dalrymple is an incredible read. It's about the travels of a 6th-century monk from Mount Athos to Egypt. Dalrymple also founded the Jaipur Literary Festival.

I immensely enjoyed this discussion. Despite what I assume to be a considerable age difference, I relate to the thoughts and spiritual desires both of you younger men expressed.

In retirement, my husband and I bought a villa on a very isolated Caribbean beach where I live a semi-monastic life. Having studied Christianity through a historical criticism lens, I have a very progressive perspective while still appreciating the liturgical aspects of my Episcopalian tradition.

10 years ago, in a small Mexican coastal town, I and others organized a small group of 10 to 15 liberal Christians who met Sundays in my living room for Eucharist and discussion followed by a potluck luncheon. We were fortunate to have 2 ordained members in our group. I had to return to the States a year later, the group was eventually absorbed into a new Episcopalian mission.

Anyway, I related to your discussion. Thank you.
